Frances Morris and Jennifer Higgie will discuss the evolution of art history as a tradition.
To celebrate 2018’s centenary of the vote for women, we’re delighted to present the second event of our three-part series on the subject of ‘Art & Feminism’.
For this evening event, the Director of Tate Modern Frances Morris will be in conversation with Jennifer Higgie, the Editorial Director of frieze magazine.
Frances Morris became the Director of Tate Modern in 2016. She was responsible for a radical rehang as well as curating landmark exhibitions, including three major retrospectives of artists Louise Bourgeois in 2007, Yayoi Kusama in 2012 and Agnes Martin in 2015. She has continually worked to re-imagine Tate’s collection and has been instrumental in developing its international reach and its representation of female artists: always ‘looking at the overlooked’. Morris was jointly responsible for the initial presentation of the opening collection displays at Tate Modern in 2000, which transformed the way museums present the narrative of modern art.
This conversation will explore the evolution of Morris’s work as a curator and examine the evolution of art history as a tradition. Subjects will range from the mentors who shaped her career, to a consideration of what has changed in the art world in recent years and what still needs to change.
Jennifer Higgie is the Editorial Director of frieze and the editor of Frieze Masters. She has written over 200 features, published a novel, had a screenplay made into a feature film and edited a book on art and humour.
Frances Morris joined Tate as a curator in 1987, becoming Head of Displays at Tate Modern (2000–2006) and then Director of Collection, International Art until April 2016 when she was appointed as Director.
The event will take place at ME London Hotel, WC2. There will be a wine reception after the talk.
