Collaboration as a key driver of artistic creation with Ellen Mara De Wachter and Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard

Art making is a process shrouded in mystery. One of the most central, but also most frequently mystified and critically neglected aspects of art practice is collaboration. 'Introduction to Collaborative Art' aims to unpack the why, where and how of art made by more than one artist, drawing upon Ellen Mara De Wachter's new book, Co-Art: Artists in Creative Collaboration.

This talk hosted by frieze associate editor Paul Clinton will explore how ongoing partnerships negotiate issues of collaboration, collectivity, communality, cooperation, coordination and the combination of individual practices, themes De Wachter brings together under her newly coined term ‘co-art’. It will also provide a clear historical overview of artistic collaboration and look at all aspects of collaboration, including the challenges and conflicts involved, both professionally and personally. It will also explore how these artistic practices might impact or influence how we work together in a wider society.

Ellen Mara De Wachter is a frequent contributor to frieze magazine, and her writing has featured in numerous publications and exhibition catalogues. Her book Co-Art: Artists on Creative Collaboration will be published by Phaidon in spring 2017. De Wachter is a Visiting Lecturer in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, and has taught at the Royal Academy Schools, Goldsmiths College among other places.

Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard are London-based artists and filmmakers. They met and began working collaboratively as students at Goldsmiths in the mid-nineties. Their first feature film, 20,000 Days on Earth, premiered at Sundance in January 2014, winning directing and editing awards.
