Incredible advances in technology have meant that immersive experiences - from virtual environments to multi-sensory storytelling - are becoming an enthralling, engaging reality across the Arts. As VR, AR and XR cross into the mainstream, the interactive opportunities they hold continue to expand as institutions and artists experiment, excite and push the boundaries.  

If you’re looking to create immersive experiences, and to understand how to truly transform audience experiences across the Arts, join us for first-hand insights, breakthrough inspiration, industry case studies, and interactive Q&A.

What I will learn:
An understanding of the technologies that comprise XR; how XR can be - and is being - used within the Arts; inspirational insights into the individuals and artists driving this forward and pushing the boundaries of reality; and, essentially, a springboard for transforming experiences within your work.

Through a mixture of presentations and Q&A with inspiring industry professionals. 

Who should attend: 
The workshop is suitable for all levels and all disciplines, however it would be particularly useful for participants who want to explore the potential of AR, VR and MR/XR. The focus of the content will be inspirational, insightful and will provide case study learnings and takeaway ideas for future XR implementation. 

We work with a cross-industry approach as we believe it is important to look beyond your discipline to inspire and support your creative growth.

Jonathan Yeo is one of the world’s leading portrait artists and has exhibited widely in both the UK and abroad. His sitters include diverse figures such as Sir David Attenborough, Malala Yousafzai, Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Baroness Lawrence, Tony Blair and The Duke of Edinburgh. Known for both traditional and experimental portraiture, he was the subject of a mid-career survey at the National Portrait Gallery in 2013 and has had further retrospectives at the Lowry in Greater Manchester (2014), the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle (2014-15) and the Museum of National History at Frederiksberg Castle in Denmark (2016). Yeo has been working with a number of technology companies to explore new ways of making portraits and has been helping Google develop 3D drawing software for virtual reality. Last year, Yeo exhibited a new series of works at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, including the first bronze sculpture to be made using an innovative combination of processes, in particular 3D scanning, virtual reality and 3D printing. Other recent projects include collaborations with the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and The Bowes Museum in County Durham. He was named Artist of the Year at GQ Magazine’s “Men of the Year” awards in 2018 and recently appointed as Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery in London. 

Ben Carlin is the co-founder of immersive content studio Megaverse. He has produced multiple XR applications for clients in Sheffield/London, leading small teams of creatives and technologists to create unique digital experiences for the arts, marketing and healthcare sectors. Ben is also National Youth Theatres resident digital artist as well as being a specialist visiting lecturer in Immersive technologies at Sheffield Hallam University.

Sarah Ellis is an award-winning producer currently working as Director of Digital Development for the Royal Shakespeare Company to explore new artistic initiatives and partnerships. In 2017, she became a fellow of the University of Worcester for her work in artsand technology. In 2016 she was awarded The Hospital Club and Creatives Industries awardfor cross industry collaboration for her work on The Tempest in collaboration with Intel and inassociation with The Imaginarium Studios. In partnership with Google’s Creative Lab, she recently produced Midsummer Night’s Dreaming which won two Lovie Awards for Innovation and Experimentation. As a theatre and spoken word producer, she has worked with the Old Vic Tunnels, Battersea Arts Centre, Birmingham REP, Contact, Freeword, Improbable, Southbank Centre, Soho Theatre, and Shunt. She has been Head of Creative Programmes at the Albany Theatre and Programme Manager for Apples & Snakes

Patrick Morgan is an artist and Creative Immersive Technologist. He recently developed and directed ‘Pigment Channel’ a VR experience at the V&A in connection with the Rodin sculpture rooms investigating the future of machine learning and AI collaborative interplay in fashion and art.   Working in the field of art and design for over 20 years with brands from The English National Ballet, Wallpaper*, RCA, Tom Ford, YSL, LVMH, Christian Dior, Fendi, Schiaparelli, The London Olympics including weekly and monthly pieces for The Financial Times, The Guardian, The New Yorker and The Observer.   Patrick co-founded Betalab a series of knowledge transfer experiences for The Arts Council introducing creatives to 360 immersive content creation and Kings College informatic labs, also working with Elephant West/Griffin Labs push the boundaries of immersive artistic experiences and raising awareness for inclusivity and new modes of thinking in the arts.

Deepa Mann-Kler, Artist & Visiting Professor In Immersive Futures Ulster University. Deepa is an award winning artist who directed & produced Retne VR for Vive which demoed at SxSW17. As CEO of Neon she uses immersive tech to create software applications for health and wellbeing including BreatheVR, an anxiety and pain management breathing tool, on Oculus for Gear VR and AR games for children in hospital. As a thought leader she speaks at conferences on the intersection of creativity, technical innovation, diversity, health, wellbeing and storytelling. As an artist she has a strong focus on public art neon installations, notably Lumiere London 2016 and 2013 in Derry/Londonderry UK City of Culture. Deepa has over twelve years experience in equality and authored the first report into racism in NI "Out Of The Shadows." She brings 13 years of non-executive director corporate governance and senior level leadership experience with cross sector exposure.
