Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina and Cosey Fanni Tutti in conversation
From the politics of the personal to being a political prisoner, both artist and avant-garde musician Cosey Fanni Tutti and artist, musician and Russian political activist Maria Alyokhina have faced opposition to their beliefs. Alyokhina was the founding member of Pussy Riot Collective when the Russian state imprisoned her in a Siberian jail. She is publishing an account of that time which will also be a manifesto for political resistance. Whilst Cosey Fanni Tutti, the avant-garde artist and musician in Throbbing Gristle, published her autobiography Art, Sex, Music (Faber) earlier this year. United as authors, these two share a punk attitude that resonates with their time.
This event will closely examine how two untrained artists became such figureheads – whether challenging assumptions about pornography and morality or questioning Russian State authority. The event will celebrate the publication of Riot Days (Penguin) by Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina on 14 September and a new exhibition of Cosey Fanni Tutti’s art which opens at Cabinet Gallery on 21 September.
