Abbas Kiarostami has died, aged 76; the World Trade Center site to get a performing arts centre

  • Award-winning Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami died yesterday, aged 76. Part of the Iranian New Wave generation of filmmakers, Kiarostami was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for Taste of Cherry.
     
  • Mami Kataoka has been announced as artistic director of the 21st Biennale of Sydney in 2018. Kataoka, chief curator at Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum, is the Biennale’s first Asian curator since its inauguration in 1973.
     
  • Billionaire businessman Ronald Perelman has donated USD$75 million to the development of a new performing arts centre at the World Trade Center site in New York. Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind first proposed the centre in 2003, but since then development has slowed. 
     
  • Leading Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli was barred from leaving the country on Saturday, having had his passport confiscated at Tehran’s international airport with no explanation. Tanavoli, a key figure in the Saqqakhaneh school of art, was scheduled to speak at the British Museum in London the following day.
     
  • The Ellsworth Kelly Foundation has donated USD$1 million to the US Foundation for Contemporary Art in order to establish a new contemporary art award. The prize will fund a solo exhibition for an emerging, midcareer, and under-recognized artist at a regional museum or university art gallery. The first recipient of the award is artist and filmmaker Cauleen Smith, who will be have a solo show at the University of Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Art in 2018.
