‘Here, the body becomes a ghostly mark in time, a blurring, a phantasm’

What I find alluring in this work is how the photograph is marked by its failure. Here, the body becomes a ghostly mark in time, a blurring, a phantasm. It is through this failure that the object becomes both less and more than a photograph in constant search for itself, perpetually shifting its gaze, floating.

Christine Tohmé is the founding director of Ashkal Alwan, the Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts. She was the curator of the Sharjah Biennial 13 (2016–17). Tohmé is the recipient of the 15th Edition of the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture, the 2006 Prince Claus Award and the 2015 CCS Bard Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence.
