Gabriella Sanchez

Pairing text and wordplay with politically charged imagery, Gabriella Sanchez (b. 1988, Pasadena; lives in Los Angeles) explores the marginal space between cultures - Mexican and American. Her latest works combining graphic design, illustration and painting, will be presented with a solo show by Charlie James Gallery for the fair's curated section, Focus LA. Sanchez will also create a large-scale installation in the backlot of Paramount Pictures Studios for Frieze Projects, titled HOMMES, HOMES, HOMES (2020) focusing on Chicanx car culture, machismo and the culture of representation.

Sayre Gomez

Sayre Gomez's (b. 1982, Chicago; lives in Los Angeles) hyperreal paintings are at the crossroads of image culture and urban reality in Los Angeles. Using visual cues and images from LA's cityscape, Gomez composes pastiched visions of the urban landscape. His solo show at François Ghebaly for Focus LA, accompanies Gomez's first outdoor sculpture for Frieze Projects; the installation will feature a palm tree cell phone tower in the backlot, exposing how the stagecraft of Hollywood has made its way into urban planning.

Naama Tsabar

Israeli-born artist Naama Tsabar (b. 1982, Tel Aviv; lives in New York) draws from her interest in sound and musical instruments to create sculptures and peroformative works. For Frieze Projects, Tsabar proposes a sonic performance, Untitled (Double Face) using two electric guitars, merging audio and visual to explore notions of intimacy, duality and cooperation. Tsabar's first solo exhibition in California at Shulamit Nazarian also coincides with Frieze Week LA, with new sculptures and sound-based works.

Avery Singer

Hauser & Wirth debuts rising star Avery Singer (b. 1987, New York; lives in New York) with a solo presentation in the main section of the fair. Merging high-tech process with historical painting modes, Singer is one of the most forward-thinking artist experimenting with new technologies to create layered works.

Tao Hui

Chinese artist Tao Hui explores social identity, gender status and cultural crisis through video and installation. His video The Dusk of Tehran (2014) will be screened at Frieze Los Angeles, for Frieze Film & Talks in the backlot of Paramount Pictures Studios. Inspired by Hong Kong pop singer Anita Mui, Hui's film features a young local actress in the back of the taxi wearing a bridal gown and smoking and reprising Anita Mui's words in Persian. In their new geographical context, these observations on social ambition, the desire for love and the difficulty of finding it become an implied criticism of the restrictions imposed on women in Iran.
