For Frieze London 2016, the Focus section features 37 galleries, each founded in or after 2004. Advised by curators Jacob Proctor (Curator, Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society) and Fabian Schöneich (Curator, Portikus), Focus brings together specially curated projects by some of the most innovative galleries working today. The purpose of the Focus Stand Prize is to recognize a specific innovative curatorial response to the context of the art fair.

This year, a jury of international institutional curators and directors has presented the award to Proyectos Ultravioleta (H21)for their exceptional presentation of Vivian Suter and Elisabeth Wild. The jury praised the ‘strongly curated presentation of two distinct bodies of works, which creates an exciting parity between the works on view.’

The jury extended special commendations to Silberkuppe, Berlin (H26), for their presentation of works by Michaela Eichwald, Margaret Harrison, and Anne Speier, and Carlos/Ishikawa, London (H24), for their stand featuring Darja Bajagić and Lloyd Corporation.

This year’s Focus Stand Prize jurors were Gary Carrion-Murayari, Kraus Family Curator, New Museum; Yung Ma, Curator, Service Création Contemporaine et Prospective, Centre Pompidou; and Judith Welter, Director, Kunsthaus Glarus.

The Frieze London Stand Prize, which recognizes an outstanding presentation in the main section of this year’s Frieze London, was awarded yesterday to kurimanzutto, Mexico City (D7) for their display of works by Leonor Antunes, Roman Ondak, and Gabriel Orozco.

Frieze London opened to the public today, featuring more than 160 of the world’s leading galleries, showcasing today’s most significant artists across its main and curated sections, alongside the fair’s celebrated non-profit programme of ambitious new artist commissions and talks. Frieze London is supported by main sponsor Deutsche Bank for the 13th consecutive year, continuing a shared commitment to discovery and artistic excellence.
