Frieze Week: Monday

Frieze New York 2018 opens this week, bringing 190 galleries from 30 countries across the globe to Randalls Island Park, Manhattan. 

While the fair may not open its doors until the first Preview on Wednesday, Frieze Week already offers plenty of unmissable art around the city.

Opening today is Eduardo Chillida at Hauser & Wirth on 69th Street - the late Spanish artist’s inaguaral exhibition at the gallery, featuring lesser-known aspects of his oeuvre such as small sculptures, collages and drawings. Another unmissable show on the Upper East Side is Huma Bhabha’s ‘With a trace’, at Salon 94 - timed to coincide with the Bhabha’s recently opened commission on the Met Fifth Avenue's Cantor Roof Garden.

For an alternative chance to enjoy world class art outdoors across town, try High Line Art's installation of I Lift My Lamp Beside the Golden Door (2018) by Berlin-based artist Dorothy Iannone, adjacent to the High Line at W 22nd Street - one of Alex Waxman’s (Editorial Director of the Standard) top picks for the area. At the nearby Whitney Museum, don’t miss the Grant Wood restrospective, frieze magazine Senior Editor Andrew Durbin’s pick of the week’s institutional shows. 

Frieze New York 2018 runs May 3-6.
