For the first Frieze Los Angeles, men’s and women’s fashion retailer MATCHESFASHION.COM recreates 5 Carlos Place, its flagship London townhouse, on the Paramount Backlot. The retail and broadcasting hub hosts a special series of talks and events with leading creative voices.

To mark the partnership, Frieze and MATCHESFASHION.COM have produced The Frieze Week Podcast: a new, free series produced by Frieze in partnership with MATCHESFASHION.COM, dedicated to conversations about and around Frieze fairs.

The first instalment celebrates the cultural landscape of L.A. as embodied in Frieze Los Angeles, featuring Frieze Studios Senior Editor Matthew McLean in conversation with key figures in the city’s art, culinary and entertainment scenes. Over three episodes, the guests share everything from expert insight and life stories to L.A. restaurant recommendaitons and Oscar tips.

In the premier episode, Alison Brower of The Hollywood Reporter discusses the magazine’s evolution and the intersection between entertainment and contemporary art on the eve of the first Frieze LA, including how Instagram is changing Hollywood and the “the million dollar question” of the 2019 Oscars.

The next episode features Kwang Uh and Mina Park of Baroo. Described by Jonathan Gold as ‘the taste of the future’, the inventive, Korean-influenced cooking at Baroo drew hordes of diners to a nondescript strip mall, before the restaurant closed in late 2018 - but Kwang and Mina have revived specially for Frieze Los Angeles. They share how their mutual passion for the cooking of Korean buddhist nun brought them together, and explain why fermentation is not just a technique, but a philosophy.

In the final episode, Matthew talks to artist Trulee Hall, whose sprawling, tentacular installation Infestation (2019) is one of the most show-stopping of the Frieze Projects curated by Ali Subotnick on the Paramount Backlot. As well as going deep into the ideas behind this piece, Trulee opens up about the role of sexuality in her acclaimed solo show at Maccarone Los Angeles, and what she learned from stints at theme parks, driving ice cream trucks and editing pornographic films.

Specially for Frieze Los Angeles, two episodes of MATCHESFASHION.COM’s own podcast, The Collector’s House, is recorded live at 5 Carlos Place on the Paramount Backlot, with artist Tom Sachs in conversation from 2:00pm on Saturday, February 16th and Greg Chait, founder of The Elder Statesman, at 12:30pm on Sunday.
