Frieze has announced the appointment of Kyla McMillan as the new Director of The Armory Show in New York.
McMillan has worked at galleries including David Zwirner and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, and is the founder of itinerant gallery and consultancy Saint George Projects, which has curated programmes in Berlin, Jamaica, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, New York and Zurich.
As Director, McMillan will have overall responsibility for The Armory Show, from gallery relations to curatorial partnerships to collector engagement. Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the New York fair following its 2023 acquisition by Frieze and the celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2024.
‘I am honoured to join The Armory Show at this important moment in the fair’s history,’ she said. ‘My goal is to empower collectors and emphasize the fair as a platform for artists, galleries and art enthusiasts. The Armory Show is a foundational fair for New York and the US art market. I look forward to building on its achievements, championing new voices and creating opportunities for diverse perspectives in contemporary art.’
Kristell Chadé, Executive Director of Fairs, Frieze, said: ‘Kyla’s experience and creative drive will undoubtedly take The Armory Show to new heights. Her past projects have demonstrated a talent for reaching new audiences and forging meaningful connections. The appointment strengthens Frieze’s network and our standing as leaders in the US arts scene.’
This year’s Armory Show takes place 6 – 8 September 2024 at the Javits Center, New York.
