Carson Chan

Carson Chan is the inaugural director of the Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and the Natural Environment at MoMA, where he has a joint appointment as a curator in the museum’s Architecture and Design department. Chan is also co-founder of Current, a scholarly collective for architecture history and environment. His academic work focuses on the architecture of postwar public aquariums built during the rise of environmentalism.

Art and the climate share a crucial trait – rapid change. Carson Chan explores how a theory of ‘liquid modernity’ has made new waves in art and asks: What if art institutions acted like water?
