Following his recent institutional debut at the New Museum, New York, Los Angeles artist Diedrick Brackens discusses his use of weaving - a technique pioneered at the Bauhaus by women whose access to other courses were restricted - and the way it intersects with his concerns of identity and history with the Hammer Museum’s Erin Christovale,

Diedrick Brackens (b. 1989, Mexia, TX, lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) received a BFA from University of North Texas, Denton, TX and an MFA in textiles from California College of the Arts, Oakland, CA. He is an Assistant Professor and Program Head of the Fiber Department at California State University Long Beach. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at New Museum, New
York, NY; Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, CA; Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; and Johansson Projects, Oakland, CA. Recent group exhibitions include Made in L.A. 2018, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; California African American Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Jewish Contemporary Art Museum, San Francisco, CA; Dimensions Variable, Miami, FL; Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, NY; and Denny Gallery, New York, NY. Forthcoming exhibitions include Sewanee University Art Gallery, TN in October 2019 and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale, AZ in 2021. Brackens is in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX; the New Orleans Museum of Art, LA; and the Oakland Museum of California, CA. Brackens is represented by Various Small Fires, Los Angeles/Seoul and Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, NY.

Erin Christovale is the Associate Curator of the Hammer Museum and the co-founder of Black Radical Imagination. She was previously an independent curator, before co-curating the 2018 Made in L.A. Biennial at the Hammer.
