VALIE EXPORT, Stand up. Sit down, 1989 (Draft), LENTOS Kunstmuseum / VALIE EXPORT Center Linz

VALIE EXPORT is considered to be one of the most important internationally renowned artists in conceptual media, performance and film art. To celebrate her 80th birthday, the LENTOS presents a selection of thirty of her works and work groups, including works from the LENTOS's own holdings, which were significantly enlarged through the purchase of the artist's estate in 2015.

Alongside a major conference entitled ANAGRAMMATIC BODIES, which will be held at the VALIE EXPORT Center, the exhibition puts the focus on VALIE EXPORT’s intensive preoccupation with the body, which the artist articulated in a wide range of different media. At the centre of her attention is the body as a subject exposed to social discipline and the logic of technological inscription. Iconic works are complemented in the exhibition by works rarely – or never before – on display. They are presented against the backdrop of the processes of pictorial invention and reasoning reconstructed from the VALIE EXPORT Center’s archival holdings.

This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the LENTOS Kunstmuseum and the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz
