Tessa Lynch, H25
Frutta presents a solo presentation by Tessa Lynch, an artist working predominantly in sculptural installation, text and performance. She is interested in the built environment and particularly the agency that citizens have within it. This is evident in the bold project Raising at Jupiter Artland, which saw the gallery audience partake in designing and building a modular house, and in subtler work such as Hand Helds, a delicate perforated line that hints at physical flexibility and manipulation.
For Focus, Lynch presents a new installation that explores the emotional impact of the built environment. Working from memory, she mimics urban objects and scenarios. Forms that are both recognizable and more abstract are made sensitive to the unknowable commanding powers at play in the city. Her research spans from investigating the existence of the female flaneur/ flâneuse through to activism and town planning.
Lynch evokes the sense of a city ‘slowing down’ by creating a meandering thoughtful space. A slow moving ceiling fan in the centre of the space hangs down low, silently stirring. Steel forms mimicking escalator steps are upended and reconfigured to snake across the floor. The surface of each step is painted in gesso and watercolour, an action that claims the form away from the public domain and into the artist’s private space. Lynch relates this to the way in which the Bloomsbury group painted patterns on the rooms of their rented accommodation at Charleston house. A moveable framework of charred wood that spans from floor to ceiling is reconfigured in the space, dividing the works into different vignettes. The presentation refers to the fast changing nature of the urban realm and the uncertainty of its pace.
