Igshaan Adams, James Webb, Billie Zangewa
blank, Cape Town (H5)
For the Focus section of Frieze London 2019, blank presents new and significant works by Igshaan Adams (b.1982, Cape Town), James Webb (b.1975, Kimberley), and Billie Zangewa (b.1973, Blantyre).
Employing the material and formal iconographies of Islamic and South African mixed race cultures, Adams seeks to articulate his experiences of racial, religious and sexual liminality in immersive abstract works. Realised as stitched silk collages, Zangewa’s autobiographical works interrupt notions of femininity and confront the historical stereotyping and objectification of the black female body by revealing personal narratives from daily life.
An interdisciplinary conceptual artist, Webb’s mixed-media text pieces are designed as philosophical elixirs or medicines to be consumed and transmuted, opposing the idea of the permanence of the written word. Drawing together the practices of three artists living and working in South Africa now, the presentation highlights and juxtaposes each of their material and conceptual concerns and methodologies.
