With Claudia Rankine (poet and Founder, Racial Imaginary Institute)

Recipient of the 2016 MacArthur Fellowship, Claudia Rankine is the author, among many other works, of five collections of poetry, including Citizen: An American Lyric (2014).

Citizen uses poetry, essay, cultural criticism, and visual images, to explore what it means to be an American citizen in a “post-racial” society. The MacArthur Citation described as illuminating ‘the emotional and psychic tensions that mark the experiences of many living in twenty-first century America’. With her MacArthur Grant, Rankine has founded the Racial Imaginary Institute. In this event she reads from her poetry and discusses her work.
