Alley on the Inside (P11)
Directly engaging the film-set site, multi-faceted artist Patrick Jackson utilizes the tools of the film trade to create a set within a set. Acknowledging the artifice of the situation, Alley on the Inside (2019)—a made-up psychological term referring to “the dark corners of the mind”—simulates a classic cinematic trope, the outdoor urban back alley, built inside an interior set. Deepening the uncanny atmosphere, several of Jackson’s large-scale wall reliefs, which the artist compares to ectoplasm, spirits pulled from the body and made solid, hang on the faux brick walls.
Patrick Jackson (b. 1978, Los Angeles) lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2018, Jackson presented DUM MUD, a site-specific project in his one-bedroom apartment. Recent solo exhibitions of his work have been held at The Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2017); Ghebaly Gallery, Los Angeles (2016); Galerie Vallois, Paris (2015); and Nicole Klagsbrun, New York (2012).
