Almine Rech is known for its representation of minimal, perceptual, and conceptual artists such as James Turrell, John McCracken, and Joseph Kosuth, occupying spaces in Paris, Brussels, London, New York, Shanghai and recent Gstaad and Monaco locations.
Almine Rech opened her first gallery in Paris in November 1989, with an exhibition featuring a James Turrell ‘Space Division’ light piece.
In 1997, the gallery relocated to a larger space in the 13th arrondissement with a solo show by John McCracken, followed by James Turrell's '‘Wedgework Milk Run III’, which is now part of the Aarhus Museum Collection.
Throughout the years, Almine Rech has expanded, opening new locations throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, and the United States.
In addition to preserving long-standing relationships with renowned artists such as Joseph Kosuth, James Turrell, and De Wain Valentine, Almine Rech works with emerging artists like Farah Atassi, Oliver Beer, Andrea Marie Breiling, Genieve Figgis, Daniel Gibson, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, George Rouy, Vaughn Spann, Emma Stern, Claire Tabouret, Genesis Tramaine, Amanda Wall, Chloe Wise, and Huang Yuxing alongside established artists and estates, such as John M Armleder, Karel Appel, Alexander Calder, Ha Chong-Hyun, Günther Förg, Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Pablo Picasso, Antoni Tàpies, Mai-Thu, Richard Prince, Tom Wesselmann, and Kim Tschang-Yeul.
It remains Almine Rech’s mission to continually seek out and include new artists in its program, with a focus on excellence and originality in the painting tradition. Art is about freedom of expression. Almine Rech loves to make contact and develop relationships with artists who use this freedom to contribute to contemporary society. Art is thus embodied throughout history.
In 2006, the Paris gallery relocated to the Marais and opened with a group exhibition curated by French fashion designer and photographer Hedi Slimane.
In subsequent years Almine Rech opened spaces in Brussels, London, New York, and Shanghai. The inaugural exhibition in New York showcased works of Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso. A second space opened in Paris on Avenue Matignon (with a further expansion of the space in 2022), and a second New York gallery in Tribeca opened in October 2023 with an exhibition by Vaughn Spann. In 2024, the gallery expanded in Monaco with the opening of a new space in the Carré d'Or district. In addition to exhibitions hosted in the various gallery locations, Almine Rech participates in numerous art fairs including Art Basel, TEFAF, Paris+, and Frieze.
The gallery presents its in-house published catalogs and editions through Almine Rech Editions, featuring a broad collection of new and limited-run books in print and online catalogs and select items can also be found at Almine Rech Paris, Brussels, London, New York, Monaco, and Shanghai.
Almine Rech is also the co-founder of FABA (Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso), which is dedicated to upholding Pablo Picasso’s legacy and maintains an extensive archive of his works along with contributions to collaborations on modern and contemporary art with international institutions and exhibitions.
