Mai 36 Galerie, founded in 1987 by Victor Gisler, has made a significant impact on the contemporary art scene for over three decades. The gallery held its first exhibition, by artist Les Levine, in 1988 at its original location on Maihofstrasse 36 in Lucerne. In 1996, Mai 36 relocated to a three-story townhouse in the heart of Zurich. Continuing its expansion, Mai 36 Galerie opened a second branch in Madrid, Spain, in March 2024.
The gallery is committed to showcasing and promoting the works of both emerging and established international contemporary artists. It focuses on those who engage with profound questions about art, particularly relating to major movements that surfaced after 1945. The program draws inspiration from transformative periods in the 1960s and 1970s, emphasizing influences like Pop Art, Minimal Art, and Conceptual Art.
Mai 36 Galerie is especially interested in artists who explore fundamental themes of art, investigating concepts such as perception, communication, and the systemic nature of artistic practice. This exploration often provokes critical discussions about the significance and role of art in today's society, encouraging reflection on contemporary experiences and viewpoints. Recently, the gallery has integrated a new generation of artists into its roster, enriching its diverse offering.
The gallery regularly presents artists through exhibitions and publications and actively participates in international art fairs, including Art Basel (Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris), Frieze Seoul, Arco Madrid, Art Brussels, and Miart Milan. Since its establishment, Mai 36 Galerie has built strong partnerships with museums and public institutions worldwide, fostering a reputation for lasting collaborations with its artists.
