Spotting a beret in a shop on London’s Portobello Market, the Creative Director of fashion house Moschino, Jeremy Scott, immediately recognized it as a Judy Blame. It was only for hire, but Scott pleaded with the owner to let him buy it. Later, Scott convinced Blame to collaborate with him to design 30 new berets for a new collection. Sadly Judy Blame passed away earlier this year, far too young: ‘it will always be a reminder of him, and how fragile life is’, Scott says. ‘But there’s so much life in it too. Everything on the hat was a key to someone else’s life, and now they’re hanging around on my hat, having another life; a new life.’

‘The Thing’ is a new series of eight short films starring Jarvis Cocker, Neil Tennant, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Goshka Macuga, Jeremy Scott, Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Mack and Haegue Yang. They have been each been asked to choose a single object of significance from their working or living environment and discuss what makes it special. Directed by Peter Strickland, the series is based on a long-running frieze d/e magazine column, ‘Das Ding’. From Brian O'Doherty to Adrian Piper to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry read the previous series’ respondents here.
