Founded in June 2021 by Rebecca Heidenberg and Gregory Smith, Dreamsong is situated on a small compound in Northeast Minneapolis and is comprised of a gallery, a standalone Cinema, and a cottage used as an artist’s residency. Dreamsong’s program is focused on intergenerational emerging and mid-career artists from Minnesota and beyond, with an emphasis on female-identified and under-recognized artists.
Dreamsong’s inaugural exhibition, "A Glitter of Seas," explored diverse experiences related to motherhood through contemporary artists living in Minnesota alongside artists with significant national and international prominence, including Nicole Havekost, Nan Goldin, Julie Buffalohead, Camille Henrot and Frida Orupabo among others. Since then, we have continued to contextualize the work of local artists in broader conversations through organizing group exhibitions, while also presenting solo exhibitions for our growing roster of gallery artists. Dreamsong frequently publishes catalogues and commissions writing related to our exhibitions. Siri Engberg, curator at the Walker Art Center, contributed an essay to our publication accompanying Ta-coumba T. Aiken’s recent solo exhibition at the gallery.
Aside from a rigorous exhibitions schedule, Dreamsong is also committed to public engagement and programming. In 2022, the gallery spearheaded the inaugural Twin Cities Art Week with over 20 venues including the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Year-round programming in our Cinema includes experimental music, performance art, artist talks, readings and screenings, and has featured artists such as Paul Chan, Mika Rottenberg, Moyra Davey, Ja’Tovia Gary, and Illana Harris-Babou, among many others.
