Hot Wheels (Athens, London) has been announced as the winner of the Focus Stand Prize at Frieze London 2024 for its solo presentation by New York art/fashion collective CFGNY. Special mentions also went to Gianni Manhattan, presenting Kiki Furlan, and Selebe Yoon, presenting Hamedine Kane.
The jury praised Hot Wheels’s booth for engaging with ‘the challenges of the commercial art fair context through an artist-designed display system incorporating different bodies of work. Accompanied by generous interpretation materials, the booth is a strong point of entry into CFGNY’s sculptural practice and their defining, innovative research on the term “vaguely Asian.”’
The Focus Stand Prize highlights younger galleries taking part in Frieze London and rewards those who participate with ambitious and well-researched presentations. The 2024 jury comprises Robert Leckie (director at Gasworks), Julia Grosse (project advisor at Gropius Bau and Conception, and co-founder and artistic director at Contemporary And) and Stella Bottai (senior curator-at-large at Aspen Art Museum).
About CFGNY
CFGNY (Concept Foreign Garments New York) is a New York-based artist collective founded in 2016 composed of Daniel Chew, Ten Izu, Kirsten Kilponen and Tin Nguyen. Across fashion, video, performance, installation and sculpture, CFGNY explores the phenomenon of ‘global Asianness’. For Frieze London 2024, CFGNY works with cardboard and porcelain to reveal the complex position of Asia within a global network that often occludes it as both a place and an idea.
Hot Wheels is at Frieze London, stand F12.
About Focus
Focus is Frieze’s long-standing section dedicated to fostering a community of young galleries. The redesign of Frieze London 2024 relocates Focus at the heart of the fair. Advised by Angelina Volk (Emalin, London), Piotr Drewko (Wschód, Warsaw) and Cédric Fauq (Chief Curator at CAPC Musée d'art contemporain Bordeaux), this year’s edition features 34 exhibitors, spanning 21 countries, presenting solo or two-person shows.
Focus is presented in collaboration with Stone Island, whose bursaries further aid young galleries’ participation in the fair alongside Frieze’s existing support.
