London-based artist Nat Faulkner has won the 2024 Camden Art Centre Emerging Artist Prize at Frieze London. Faulkner, represented by Brunette Coleman in the Focus section, will have a solo exhibition at Camden Art Centre in 2025 as part of the award.
The annual Emerging Artist Prize was launched at Frieze London 2018. Previous winners include Jack O’Brien (whose exhibition is currently on display at Camden Art Centre), Marina Xenofontos, Tenant of Culture, Julien Creuzet and Wong Ping.
Faulkner calls analogue photography a ‘magical practice’, embracing the endless mutability of the darkroom: its variables of chemistry, environmental factors and time. He talks about his ‘palette’ of materials – including long-expired photographic developer – and refers to early pioneers of photography, such as Henry Fox Talbot. His parallel sculpture practice also reflects a recontextualizing of the technology of the past. He uses ‘silvering’, the process by which glass mirrors were traditionally made, to introduces elements of irregularity and materiality to his pieces.
The 2024 Prize was selected by a panel chaired by Martin Clark (director, Camden Art Centre), with Gina Buenfeld Murley (curator, Camden Art Centre) and Joseph Constable (head of exhibitions, De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea).
Clark said: ‘The Focus section is always a highlight of Frieze London, and this year is one of the strongest presentations yet. It has never been more important to create and protect spaces of risk and experimentation. Nat Faulkner’s work caught the jury’s attention for its rigorous and seductive use of materials and process: we can’t wait to start working with him on his show at Camden in 2025.’
Brunette Coleman said: ‘It’s a surreal way to start our first year presenting at Frieze; we’re beyond grateful to Camden Art Centre for this exciting opportunity. We’re already anticipating how Nat can push his sculptural and photographic language at an even more ambitious scale for the exhibition in 2025.’
