This summer's edition of Frieze Viewing Room celebrates the artistic landscape of Los Angeles with a line-up of the city’s defining galleries and a new Digital Art section curated by Venus Lau
Frieze Viewing Room, Los Angeles Edition, taking place July 27 – August 1, brings together 47 leading galleries from Los Angeles and around the world. The initiative will run concurrent to the first-ever Gallery Weekend Los Angeles and offer a city-wide program of events and activations for Frieze members and audiences.
Venus Lau curates a new section dedicated to digital art featuring commissions by artists Liu Chuang, Nik Kosmas, Peng Ke, aaajiao and Lu Yang. All works in the curated section will also be available to purchase as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
This edition’s scale, refined features, and, most importantly, outstanding list of participating galleries, makes this Frieze Viewing Room a must-see. For those of us in Los Angeles this July, there is much to see around town, and we look forward to welcoming many more faces next February. – Rebecca Ann Siegel, Director of Americas and Content
Digital Art
This new section curated by Venus Lau on Frieze Viewing Room is intended to showcase artists who have made digital media central to their practice in recent years. The section includes five commissions by artists Liu Chuang, Nik Kosmas, Peng Ke, aaajiao and Lu Yang.
All the works will also be available to purchase as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and will be delivered on RNDR, a blockchain GPU computing and 3D marketplace developed by pioneering Los Angeles-based company OTOY. RNDR leverages Layer 2 technology to reduce carbon emissions.
The platform will reflect recent developments in this sphere, and is intended to explore how NFTs could be a useful tool for artists, directly connecting the work they make with the market in digital space.
Digital and virtual existence is more than what appears on a screen, it is no longer opposed to the real, instead it is a part of, or an anamorphosis, of reality. Artists aaajiao, Nik Kosmas, Liu Chuang, Lu Yang and Peng Ke rethink the mechanisms of digital existence in the artworks presented in the digital section of Frieze Viewing Room, Los Angeles 2021 Edition. – Venus Lau, independent curator and writer
