This panel looks at the interconnected nature of the many sectors making up "the art world" to situate the role of biennales in furthering the field of contemporary art. Experts active across Asia and the Middle East will discuss examples of collaborations across sectors (private/public, commercial/non-commercial) necessary to support artists within a biennale context. What role do biennials play in building the career of an artist, and what is necessary to sustain this far past the event? How do biennales contribute to building the conditions for great art to be made, and what kinds of collaborations are necessary to build the infrastructure to support artmaking and thinking beyond the duration of the exhibition component of a biennial? Panellists will share case studies relating to past and future biennales that they have been involved with and opine on why biennales are still relevant today. They will also discuss the role of the art market within the biennale circuit and what a healthy collaboration across commercial and non-commercial sectors in the art world might look like.
