American artist David Salle will be in conversation with Ian Alteveer, Aaron I. Fleischman Curator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The artist will discuss his recent work and his criticism at his studio, among his paintings and works in progress.
David Salle helped define the post-modern sensibility by combining figuration with a varied pictorial language. In a career spanning nearly four decades, Salle's widely influential paintings have been shown at many of the world’s leading museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, The Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Salle is also a prolific art writer. His collection of essays, How To See was published last year by W.W. Norton. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books.
Ian Alteveer joined The Met in 2006 and is the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. He organized three Cantor Roof Garden Commissions—for Pierre Huyghe (2015), Dan Graham and Günter Vogt (2014), and Imran Qureshi (2013)—as well as the installation of William Kentridge: The Refusal of Time (2013). His recent projects have included co-curating major retrospectives for Kerry James Marshall (2016), Marisa Merz (2017), and David Hockney(2017).
