A private tour of Michael Craig-Martin’s studio led by the artist.

A principal figure of British conceptual art, Michael Craig-Martin has explored the relationship between objects and images, symbols and pictures over the past four decades, developing his hallmark style of precise, bold outlines, and flat planes of intensely vibrant colours. Through precise draughtsmanship, he uses composition to explore spatial relationships, juxtaposing and layering colour, exploring the range of everyday objects that surround our daily lives.

Michael Craig Martin was born in Dublin in 1941. He moved to the United States with his family in 1945, and studied fine art at Yale University at the same time as Richard Serra, Brice Marden and Chuck Close. In the mid-1960s he returned to Europe becoming one of the key figures in the first generation of British conceptual artists.  From 1973 to 1988, and 1994 to 2000, he taught at Goldsmiths College in London, where he was a powerful influence on a generation of his students who became known as the YBa's or Young British Artists, including Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas, and Damien Hirst. Craig-Martin’s work has featured in numerous museum exhibitions and public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid. Craig-Martin was an Artist Trustee of Tate from 1989 to 1999, and was elected to the Royal Academy in 2006. In 2016 he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to art.

Organised by Gagosian in collaboration with Frieze.
