In partnership with Getty PST ART, Frieze London is presenting the work of Los Angeles based interdisciplinary artist Candice Lin. Lin is showing a new work titled Feline Messages to the Human World (2023) composed of large-scale indigo-dyed kites drawn from Asian kite making traditions.
As part of this project Candice Lin will be running an outdoor kite-making workshop with artist and kite maker Yaeun Stevie Choi. During the workshop you will have the opportunity to learn how to make a simple rhombus kite known as the Korean stingray kite using the traditional materials of mulberry paper and bamboo. Lin will share her inks and watercolours made from natural materials such as cochineal insects, fermented indigo, madder root, and oak gall ink. During the workshop, Lin will also explain how these natural inks are prepared and used while you will get the chance to use these inks and watercolours to paint your kite.
The workshop will conclude with a group kite-flying session in the park where you'll see your creation take flight.
The workshop will take place outside of the fair, in The Regent's Park from 10AM on Saturday 14th of October 2023. We will email more information upon sign up confirmation.
The workshop lasts a total of 4 hours: 3 hours of kite making and 1 hour of kite flying.
The Workshop is open to adults and accompanied children above the age of 12.
