Name That Tune: Jim Shaw

Artist Talk at LAXART

11 Feb 2019
7000 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood
Los Angeles, CA 90038
United States

Our third contestant of Name That Tune, Jim Shaw, is a founder of the legendary experimental art rock band Destroy All Monsters. Whether he’s creating aural rites for his O-ist religion or perpetually completing a prog-rock opera, Shaw’s entanglement with music and art taps into the American unconscious with devilish aplomb. For this episode, we’ll mine the rare and radioactive elements of Shaw's record collection.

This event is part of Frieze Talks.

Jim Shaw (b. 1952, Midland, MI) is a multidisciplinary artist and an icon of the Los Angeles art scene. Shaw moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s to attend California Institute of the Arts and he is arguably one of the most notable artists to emerge from the school at that time. His work explores the countercultures and subconscious of American society, interwoven with personal history. His sources and affinities range from William Blake to Surrealism and Pop art, DC comics, science fiction, teenage psychedelia, thrift store art, political cartoons, and the work of his contemporaries.
