gallerychosun has been nestled in Samcheong-dong, the cultural hub of Seoul for over 20 years. As a daughter of Chosun Gallery established in 1971, the second oldest art gallery in Korea, it was rather natural for Mi-Seong Kwon, the founder of gallerychosun to begin her career in the art world working for her father at the prestigious Chosun Gallery. By the year 2004, Kwon decided to strike out on her own after working for her father for years. Later that year onwards, gallerychosun has been acknowledged by eagerly participating in contemporary art markets such as Art Cologne, and Art Basel Miami.
gallerychosun co-hosted the Soloshow, a project undertaking various experimental approaches in the distribution system of artworks. Since 2015, gallerychosun has also carried out a long-term project recording the exhibition process of every artist. The recording is not just a promotional video but has the value in the Korean contemporary art as an archive of an artist's work process. This year, celebrating the 20th anniversary, gallerychosun plans an exhibition titled “As the Sharpen Narrative Fades, an Unveiling Map Emerges” in collaboration with Le Wonder, a collective studio run by and for artists in France. 18 artists will take part in this project. The show will be held twice in Korea and once in France; the entire narratives will be written by three writers. Likewise, gallerychosun keeps on moving forward into the future.
While serving as Vice Chairman of the Galleries Association of Korea in 2019, CEO Mi-Seong Kwon participated in the creation of A Guidebook for Gallery Operations and Art Distribution. Additionally, she contributed to several important issues to strengthen the art market and to set up the advanced distribution system such as the establishment of A Standard Contract for the Art Industry Regulations in particular. As Kwon’s son is currently working at gallerychosun, it is utmost special to be the first and the only art gallery passing down three generations of knowhow and legacy. At the same time, however, gallerychosun refuses to stagnant, always endeavors to be more open, creative, and innovative not only in Korean Contemporary Art as well as in Global Contemporay Art World.
