Meet the Fellows of the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award 2023

Now in its fourth year, the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award presents the fellows of the 2023 edition, Aidan Bae, Matthew Cotom, Shandrea Evans, Eugina Gelbelman, Irene Gil-Ramon, Tiffany Lin, Jessica Liu, Byron Mason II and Malik Sims. The fellows share their experiences as young filmmakers and reflect on being mentored by professionals and specialists in the industry during the Ghetto Film School led program, working to develop their scripts and short films responding to this year’s theme of “Identity”.

One fellow highlights the significance of the opportunity for an emerging filmmaker: “the biggest thing that people can do is give us a platform to tell our stories and opportunities to create work.”

Another speaks to impact and influence the program has the capacity to produce, the fellows are provided a space to make films that “encourage discussion about how we can be better as a community, as a society, [and] as a country."

A jury composed of leading art and film industry figures will select the recipient of the Jury Award and recipient of a $10,000 prize. This year the the Jury is composed of  Actor, Director and Producer Jay Ellis; Producer, Matt Jackson; Executive Director & Chief Curator of The Kitchen, Legacy Russell; Director of Americas, Frieze, Christine Messineo; CEO, Ghetto Film School, Montea Robinson; SVP, Development and Production, Cristina Garza; CEO of EMEA and Head of the International Private Bank, Deutsche Bank, Claudio de Sanctis.

In addition to the main prize, The Audience Award winner will be voted for by the public, the fellow will be awarded with a $2,500 prize.

Voting for the Audience Award is currently open and closes February 12, 2023.

Winners of both Awards will be announced on February 16, 2023.
