An extraordinary global cross-section of work by contemporary artists
Frieze today published extensive new program details and highlights for Frieze New York 2016 revealing an unparalleled program of solo shows, artist commissions, curated sections, education programs and talks, creating an immersive cultural experience overlooking the East River.
Highlights include solo presentations of some of the most significant artists working today, including William Kentridge (Marian Goodman) and Melvin Edwards (Alexander Gray Associates). Other themes emerging in this year’s fair include a dedicated focus on female artists (Lisa Yuskavage and Isa Genzken at David Zwirner; Huma Bhabha, Judy Chicago and Betty Woodman at Salon 94) and artists whose work is being re-examined on the institutional level (Cornelia Parker at Frith Street and David Wojnarowicz at P.P.O.W).

Advised by Jacob Proctor (Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society at the University of Chicago) and Fabian Schöneich (Portikus), Frame brings ambitious solo presentations from Lima (Rita Ponce de León at 80m2 Livia Benavides) to Shanghai (Liu Shiyuan at Leo Xu Projects); while Focus is a platform for specially conceived presentations, with themes this year including inter-generational postitions, featuring Marina Pinksky with Eduardo Paolozzi (Clearing) and an historical installation by Michel Auder (Martos). Advised by Clara M Kim (Tate Modern), Spotlight reveals foundational movements in art through solo presentations of pioneering 20th-century figures, including Alan Shields (Van Doren Waxter), whose stitched, three-dimensional paintings have influenced many of today’s artists experimenting in craft materials; and Galerie Hervé Bize’s presentation of French painter, sculptor and light-artist François Morellet, marking the artist’s 90th birthday. Taking place daily in the fair's Auditorium, highlights of this year’s Talks program include a keynote address by Eileen Myles, about the relationship between art and poetry; a conversation between Turner Prize–winning artist Mark Leckey and frieze Co-Editor Dan Fox; and a panel discussion about how technology is changing artistic representations of the body, chaired by writer and MCA Chicago Senior Curator Omar Kholeif. Frieze Projects and Frieze Sounds
Cecilia Alemani (High Line Art, New York) has curated nine new artist commissions, spanning sound, sculpture and performance, including a special project by Maurizio Cattelan in tribute to the Daniel Newburg Gallery, Daniel Horvitz's reverse pickpocket, an audio work by GCC and a giant balloon floating above the fair conceived by Alex Da Corte.

Frieze Education
Sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the fourth consecutive year, ‘Frieze Teens’ in 2016 have collaborated with artists and institutions including TJ Wilcox, Jessi Reaves, Dieu Donné, Bridget Donahue Gallery, Materials for the Arts, MoMA PS1, Project Projects and White Columns. Frieze Teens have created the Young People’s Guide to the Fair in collaboration with Project Projects and will also serve as volunteer tour guides at Frieze New York for visiting school groups. On Sunday, May 8, the Frieze Teens will present a film about their experience of Frieze Education, in the fair's Auditorium.
Frieze Restaurants
Visitors can enjoy returning Frieze favorites Court Street Grocers, Marlow & Sons, Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, Parlor Coffee, Frankies Spuntino and Roberta’s; plus new additions Cosme, El Rey Coffee Bar & Luncheonette, Juice Press, Superiority Burger and Sant Ambroeus in the VIP Room. This year we welcome Ruinart as the official Champagne Partner for Frieze New York.
Non-Profits at the Fair
Frieze has invited three non-profit art spaces and organizations to present their programs at Frieze New York. This year’s participants include the Queens Museum, who collaborated with Frieze on this year's campaign; RxArt, an organization which commissions site-specific artist installations in healthcare facilities and hospitals throughout the US; and White Columns, the city’s oldest alternative art space, which returns for its third consecutive year.
Frieze Week gallery openings – including Lower East Side and Soho Morning (Friday, May 6), Upper East Side Morning (Saturday, May 7), and Chelsea Night (Saturday, May 7) – will be extended in 2016 and open to all.
