UK-based emerging curators of colour are invited to apply for a paid 32-month position
Applications for the third iteration of the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship at V&A East are now open and will remain so until the deadline on 10:00 Monday 22 August 2022.
Full details on the role and how to apply are on the V&A’s vacancies site.
Launched in 2020, the fellowship aims to increase accessibility, representation and social mobility within the arts. The initiative brings together artists and organizations across the non-profit and private sectors and creates an opportunity to grow and deepen curatorial practice within the UK’s leading public art institutions.
Eva Langret, Director of Frieze London said: ‘We are honoured to partner with the V&A East for the third Emerging Curators Fellowship. Creating access points for underrepresented voices to establish careers within the arts remains an urgent issue. I want to extend our thanks to Yinka Shonibare for the powerful work he created in aid of the fellowship, and to Deutsche Bank for their continued support.’
Gus Casely-Hayford, V&A East Director, and Catherine Ince, V&A East Chief Curator, added: “Creating opportunities for the next generation of creatives, and opening up and diversifying the arts sector are the driving forces behind V&A East. We’re delighted to be working with Frieze and Deutsche Bank to create a brand-new role that supports emerging curators of colour and helps tackle racial disparities in the arts, and we can’t thank Yinka Shonibare enough in helping us fund this. We have an exciting few years ahead as we get ready to open V&A East Storehouse in 2024 and V&A East Museum in 2025, and we can’t wait to welcome our new emerging curatorial fellow to the team to help us achieve this.”
Tiina Lee, CEO UK & IRL at Deutsche Bank said: ‘Creating opportunities for diversity to thrive across all parts of our community is among our key goals at Deutsche Bank. Our ongoing support for the Emerging Curators Fellowship with Frieze, since its inception in 2020, is one of the ways we can help remove barriers to careers in the arts and recognise the rich layers of meaning that different people derive through art. A huge thank you to Yinka Shonibare for helping us achieve the target for this 32-month curator position at the V&A East. Good luck to all those applying – we’re excited to meet the successful candidate’
This year’s fellow will complete their position at V&A East, the V&A’s new national museum complex currently under construction in Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, including V&A East Storehouse opening in 2024 and V&A East Museum in 2025. The V&A East fellow will gain significant experience across the museum’s range of expertise, including areas such as community engagement and co-production, and will work to help shape V&A East’s pre-opening programme, and support on new acquisitions, research for publications and gallery and exhibition development. Throughout the 32-month fellowship, the fellow will have access to mentoring sessions with members of the Frieze and Deutsche Bank leadership teams.
In addition to Deutsche Bank funding, the fellowship programme is supported by proceeds from the sale of specially commissioned artist-led editions. For the 2022 fellowship, renowned British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare created a small-scale sculpture inspired by his series of African masks and sold as an edition of 50. Selling out in record-time, the edition raised over £75,000, surpassing the fundraising goal.
