Taking place at the Paramount Theatre, Frieze Film at Frieze Los Angeles is curated by Ali Subotnick who has selected video works by international artists Tala Madani and Cécile B. Evans.
Tala Madani
Friday, February 15 and Sunday, February 17, 12 – 3 pm
In her deadpan paintings and animated videos, Tala Madani creates absurd scenes of fictive ritual usually centered around groups of men creating a grotesquerie populated by dichotomies. Figures simultaneously innocent and nefarious, furtive and self-aware, or comical and violent float through a hazy pastel palette that seems to shine light through the vulgar comforts of bonding. Obliquely referencing Madani's Iranian-American nationality, her work skirts formal and political lines to expose the slithery nature of creating an image. At Frieze Los Angeles, Madani will show recent animations The Crowd, Over Head Projection (the Crowd), Mr. Time, Spring, Cats and Cat Men, Plane Chaser, and Over Head Projection (Digger) (all 2018).
Cécile B. Evans
Thursday, February 14 and Saturday, February 16: 11:30am – 3pm
In her films, installations, sculptures and digital works, Cécile B. Evans addresses the human condition and emotions, in particular as they come into contact with technological and physical structures that seek to contain them. The video essay AGNES (the end is near) (2014) follows AGNES as she raises personal questions about obsolescence, dependency, and the future. Hyperlinks or It Didn't Happen (2014), addresses the impact of digital information on the substance of feeling and being. What the Heart Wants (2016) explores how larger infrastructures—as guided by technological means—attempt to shape and define us as we adapt and evolve in the digital age.
In addition, international galleries will present films by their artists in the Paramount Theatre.

Friday, February 15, 6:30–8 pm
Featuring video work by Tom Sachs, followed by a conversation between Sachs and Werner Herzog, moderated by Jennifer Higgie (Editorial Director, frieze magazine).
Anri Sala presented by kurimanzutto and Esther Schipper
Saturday, February 16, 3.30–4:30 pm
Artist Anri Sala will also present a special screening of Take Over (L’Internationale) and (La Marseilleise).
