This Sunday at Frieze, start your visit outside the main entrance at Frieze London where you can see Asim Waqif’s live performance This is a demonstration which crosses between architecture, art and design, with reference to urban planning.
Be sure to catch the live performances taking place around the fair. Pratchaya Phinthong will be sharing counterfeit Thaï Baht notes with fair visitors to instigate a reverse circulation of currency, and pick up one of Camille Henrot’s simplified telephones that double up as unconventional self-help hotlines.
At 12:30pm, join frieze's New York-based Senior Editor Andrew Durbin for Frieze Talks: ‘Auto/Biography’. The discussion, with Crudo author Olivia Laing, New York-based poet Diana Hamilton and Young People’s Laureate for London Momtaza Mehri, will explore how autobiography can inform modes and genres traditionally held apart from ‘life writing’.
At 3:30pm in the Auditorium watch a special screening of the films commissioned by Gucci & Frieze as part of the ‘Second Summer of Love’ series,featuring new longform films by Wu Tsang, Jeremy Deller and Josh Blaaberg.
Don’t miss the younger galleries presented in the Focus section; See Penny Goring’s series of ‘Amelia Paintings’ in which she interweaves history, myth and rumour at Arcadia Missa; Joanna Pitrowska installation at Southard Reid comprising recent imagery of zoo enclosures and photographs relating to self-protection and psychophysical relationship; and Athena Papadopoulos’s show at Emalin, featuring a cluster of DIY miniature beds perched on cocktail and medical trolleys.
Over at Frieze Masters, take a look at some of the extraordinary collections including Eric Gillis Fine Art showcasing a taste for the 19th century and Brun Fine Art showcasing a a unique Della Robbia glazed polychrome terracotta with a noteworthy collecting history.
In the Spotlight section, Gathie Falk’s solo exhibition at Equinox Gallery shows a bold disregard for convention; Sergei Eisenstein’s never before exhibited erotic drawings are arranged in groupings that demonstrate a diversity of content and biting humour at Alexander Gray Associates; and at Galerie Loevenbruck, view Japanese artist Key Hiraga’s vivid pictorial works from the ’60s and the ’70s.
End the day with a coffee at GAIL’s Bakery or a cup of tea at Postcard Teas. And for food, take your pick from Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant Umu whowill be serving elegant, Kyoto-influenced cuisine and Locanda Locatelli, serving traditional Italian dishes with a focus on quality produce. Lastly, back at Frieze London, be sure to visit the Allied Editions booth, manned by a consortium of London art institutions, to pick up new editions by Hernan Bas, Hayley Tompkins, Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley.
