This year’s wide-ranging programme, showing at the ICA and online, ‘offers a thoughtful exploration of contemporary realities, encouraging viewers to engage critically with the world around them’
Frieze Film is returning to Frieze London 2023, this year in collaboration with the ICA, London, showcasing a range of artists’ films both onsite at the ICA and online.
Ten artists have been selected to participate: Noémie Goudal, Kiluanji Kia Henda, donna Kukama, Sarah Meyohas, Elisa Giardina Papa, Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings, Sin Wai Kin, Jordan Strafer, Alberta Whittle and Lewis Teague Wright.
This year’s programme sees a series of visual narratives that collectively weave contemporary and historical themes. It ranges from intimate explorations of human emotions and societal dynamics to broader strokes of anthropological truths and political landscapes. The programme also transcends genre boundaries, showcasing artists’ film and moving image as a medium that blurs the lines between reality and speculative fiction, and between the individual and the collective: a mirror reflecting the complex and ever-changing narratives of our time.
The selection panel consisted of leading curators specializing in the moving image: Steven Cairns (Curator, Artists’ Film & Moving Image, ICA), Róisín Tapponi (Founder, CEO and Head of Programmes, Shasha Movies) and Greg de Cuir Jr. (Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Kinopravda Institute in Belgrade). In a statement they said: ‘In making this selection [we] sought works characterized by depth and perceptiveness. These films not only showcase the nuanced spectrum of artists’ film and moving image being made today, but offer a thoughtful exploration of contemporary realities, encouraging viewers to engage critically with the world around them.’
The works are being shown onsite at the ICA, 10–15 October. The programme launches online on 10 October and is available until 29 October at frieze.com.
