Mr., ‘Those That Bring Color to Life and Living’

Across painting, sculpture and works on paper, Mr. plays with the popular aesthetics of anime and manga, exploring the imagery’s circulation as a form of escapist world-building that stems from postwar Japanese youth subculture. His solo show ‘Those That Bring Color to Life and Living’, presented by Lehmann Maupin (New York, Hong Kong, Seoul, London), is his first in the UK.

Vladimir Chernyshev, ‘Heavy Water’

Curated by Alesya Veremyeva, this exhibition by Moscow’s Artwin Gallery celebrates the varied practice of artist Vladimir Chernyshev, on show in London for the first time. Featuring documentation of Chernyshev’s land-art projects and murals, alongside new objects and works on paper, ‘Heavy Water’ highlights the themes at the core of his work: creation, transformation and decay. Chernyshev also embeds these ideas in his choice of materials, choosing the impermanence of wood, tar, soot, wax and rosin.

Muyeong Kim, ‘Servant School’

Seoul-based Muyeong Kim’s work is steeped in the seduction and discipline of theatre. Presented by N/A (Seoul), Kim’s films and photographs complicate the relationship between the observer and observed. His subjects wear affectations of desire, compulsion, guilt and boredom like opulent costumes. The exhibition’s title comes from the Brothers Quay’s Institute Benjamenta (1995), a film Kim has described as so perfect that he almost didn’t want anyone else to see it. This desire for control emerges in Kim’s carefully choreographed environments and meticulous approach to image-making.
