‘Smoke’: Karla Ekaterine Canseco and Roksana Pirouzmand

At Frieze London 2024, Murmurs presents a dual exhibition by two Los Angeles-based artists, both working across sculpture and performance

For Smoke at Frieze London, Murmurs is presenting a dual stand of ceramics by Karla Ekaterine Canseco and Roksana Pirouzmand. Canseco’s sculptures are inspired by the history and mythology of the xoloitzcuintli, an ancient breed of Mexican dog given by Xolotl, Aztec god of fire and death, to Indigenous people. She is interested in clay’s ability to carry information from the past into the present. Pirouzmand uses clay to address diasporic memory and ideas of care or violence. Her ceramic wall tablets, painted with shades of clay slip, depict clusters of female figures with obscured faces, appearing as anonymous permutations of a single being.
