For the Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke, Frieze Masters is a trove of ‘hidden histories’ and an endless source of inspiration. As he walks around, he ‘makes and destroys work’ in his head.
Locke gives a tour of Frieze Masters, selecting three works for their evocations of place and power: a 16th-century helmet (Peter Finer, E3) Aubrey Williams’s paintings of the Guyanese landscape and ‘psyche’ (October Gallery, S3), and his own father Donald Locke’s portrayal of survival past and present in his ‘Plantation Series’ (Alison Jacques, S18).
Locke’s major exhibition, ‘what have we here?’ opens 17 October 2024 – 9 February 2025 at the British Museum. In this groundbreaking new show, Locke explores, questions and challenges narratives of British imperialism through objects from the British Museum collection, alongside specially commissioned new works.
Hew Locke’s works are presented at Frieze London by Hales (A24) and Almine Rech (C20).
