Permission to fall is a performative work in two part created for Frieze Sculpture - set in The Regent’s Park and at Frieze London, challenging the way we experience sculpture.
Public life and activities follow our own agendas within a shared social hierarchy. In this context, two to three characters move among these public activities, each assigned a specific role inspired by different personality traits used in the analysis of human behaviour in consumer markets and politics.
Each character carries a bag, purse or clutch containing various objects that indicate their psychological state or political stance: items like certain pills, pamphlets, electrical cords, keys and locks. At a certain time and place, a character will fall to the ground, causing the contents of their bag to spill on to the grass, pavement or floor. This ‘accident’ creates a rip in the social fabric, making a small ‘wave’ in the surrounding social environment.
The performance is random and sudden, occurring over a short period in public and semi-public arenas around The Regent’s Park and at Frieze London. Here, people engage in their daily activities: returning from somewhere, leaving, resting, cycling, standing in line or arriving in a taxi. This spontaneous event disrupts the routine flow, creating a moment of reflection and interaction within the shared public space.
Frieze Sculpture is curated by Fatoş Üstek and the outdoor exhibition is located in The Regent’s Park, and coincides with Frieze London and Frieze Masters. 9 – 13 October.
FOS is represented by Nils Stærk.
