In this event, Peter Harrington will showcase jewels from their shelves to chart book culture’s fascinating aesthetic history from the earliest textual cultures of East Asia through to the 21st century. Like other art forms, books and their creators have sought to simultaneously reflect and craft the tastes of their diverse audiences with spectacular results. This global history brings together such artists as the wood block carvers of early Japanese Buddhist temples, manuscript calligraphers of the Islamic World, and Parisian ateliers active during the Renaissance. Underlying a millennium of craftsmanship is a shared reverence for books, their messages, and their patrons. Peter Harrington welcomes you to an evening of discovery and wonder.
