Peter Blum has collaborated with a wide range of artists both as a gallerist and publisher since he began his career at Galerie Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland in 1971. Blum began Peter Blum Edition in 1980 and was among the first print publishers to work with a new generation of European and American artists including John Baldessari, Louise Bourgeois, Eric Fischl, Alfredo Jaar, Barbara Kruger, Brice Marden, James Turrell, and Luc Tuymans among others. The Peter Blum Edition Archive (1980-1994) was the subject of the exhibition “Singular Multiples” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2006.
In 1984, Blum co-founded Parkett Magazine, an international forum for contemporary art. From 1993 to 2012, Peter Blum SoHo at 99 Wooster hosted exhibitions of artists working in a variety of media such as Alighiero Boetti, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Alberto and Augusto Giacometti, Alex Katz, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Ad Reinhardt, and Robert Ryman among others.
In 2006, Blum opened an additional exhibition space in Chelsea at 526 West 29 Street. Exhibitions by artists included John Beech, Rosy Keyser, Esther Kläs, Matthew Day Jackson, David Reed, and SUPERFLEX among others. In 2013, Blum moved his galleries to 20 West 57th Street in Midtown New York. Exhibitions by artists included Nathaniel Dorsky, Helmut Federle, Alex Katz, Chris Marker, Enoc Perez, Su-Mei Tse, and John Zurier. Group exhibitions included works by Huma Bhabha, Tacita Dean, and Nam June Paik among others.
Most recently in 2017, the gallery relocated downtown to a 7,000 square foot space at 176 Grand Street. Solo exhibitions by artists have included Alex Katz, Nicholas Galanin, Joyce J. Scott, Esther Kläs, John Zurier, Rebecca Ward, and Helmut Federle. Group exhibitions included works by Marina Adams, Sarah Crowner, and Suzan Frecon.
