Designs for the new V&A Museum in London are released; the Guggenheim appoints an artist to its board for the first time in five decades
- New York’s Swiss Institute will temporarily move into a 5,000-square-foot project space at 102 Franklin Street in Tribeca next month, where it will present its programming under the name ‘Swiss In situ’. The organization will relocate to a new long-term location next year.
- The London Legacy Development Corporation has released digital renderings of the Victoria and Albert Museum's new building, which will be constructed in the east of the city on the site of the 2012 Olympics. The new building, which has been dubbed V&A East, has been designed by London-based firm Allies and Morrison and Irish architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, and will occupy 194,000-square-feet.
- Leading Egyptian director Mohamed Khan died on Tuesday, aged 73. Khan, who found fame in 1983 with Streetplayer, dedicated his life to tackling Egypt’s various social ills, from its rigid class system to the longstanding oppression of women.
- The Detroit Institute of Arts has launched a multimillion-dollar initiative to reinforce its commitment to African American art. With director Salvador Salort-Pons at the helm, the three-year project will involve acquisitions, exhibitions, commissions, community partnerships, staff development and internships.
- The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has appointed American artist Rashid Johnson to its board of trustees. Johnson, whose work is represented in the Guggenheim collection, is the first artist to serve on the board since Hilla Rebay, the institution's founding director and curator.
