Frieze 91 Member Spotlight: Vidisha Jain
For the November edition of Frieze 91 Member Spotlight we have Vidisha Jain a multi-faceted visual artist. Raised in London, and currently residing in Los Angeles, she uses her artistic skills to support artists in the music industry to elevate their imagery. She utilizes mediums including photography, video, and graphic design, while tinkering with interactive coding and physical computation in her art installations. Vidisha aspires to converge art and music as a facilitator for community, where audiences can find a sense of belonging with others through their connection to her artwork and the musicians she works with.
1. Describe yourself in three words?
Curious, Collaborative, Trusting
2. What’s your proudest moment?
Whenever I go to a new city by myself and immerse myself in the local culture and make new friends. I think I underestimate how much skill that requires.
3. Art icon?
Musical artists are the ultimate artists to me. They bring together music, visual art, fashion, choreography, and storytelling, and they create some of the longest lasting communities around their art. There’s no other art form that utilizes multiple senses simultaneously in the same way.
4. Hidden gem in your city?
In Los Angeles, I spend a lot of time at this secluded meditation retreat centre in Benedict Canyon in the Beverly Hills area. There is also a retreat center in Big Bear slightly outside of Los Angeles where I have been on a retreat at - one of the most peaceful weeks of my life.
5. Favourite restaurant?
I’ve definitely spent too much time at Elephante in Santa Monica.
6. Song you can listen to on repeat?
Troye Sivan - Got Me Started. And the music video.. OMG! I watch that repeat too. It’s an audio-visual masterpiece.
7. Exhibition you’re excited to see (or have seen)?
One I recently enjoyed was the Mr Brainwash Art Museum in Beverly Hills. He samples a lot of classical art and then puts his own new spin on it. The whole museum is quite fascinating.
8. A skill you’re working on mastering?
I am a big believer in art utilizing all the senses, so that means I’m always the person at museums getting in trouble for touching the art. With that, I am trying to master physical computation skills so that I can create artwork that is supposed to be touched, so that the public can be active participants in art rather than passive audiences. Also - want to be better at painting faces and people.
9. A memorable place?
I know the High Line is a “tourist spot” - but they always have a new installation or activation there. Right now, they have a sculpture of a giant pigeon on the intersection of 30th and 10th Av. Memorable is an understatement!
10. Favourite museum?
I always enjoy visiting LACMA. My favorite exhibit that I still remember to this day there in January 2022. Interscope Records teamed up with a range of visual artists and had them create artworks with a new perspective of iconic album covers. I also saw the Ed Ruscha exhibit there earlier this year. They always have something fun going on there.
11. Artist you’re currently thinking about?
I just went to Mercer Labs in NYC and saw Roy Nachum’s pieces “Limitless” and “Dark Matter.” I’m still processing my feelings about it… come back to me on my final thoughts haha.
