Meet the High Line’s Pigeon Oracle

A highlight of Frieze Week in New York, Iván Argote’s monumental avian presence looks forward to the eventual marginalization of humans in their own cities

The last genetic traces of the dinosaurs can be found in the bird life of the modern world.  ‘Dinosaur’ – a pigeon the size of a T-rex – on the High Line in Chelsea is artist Iván Argote’s gigantic rumination on evolution, extinction and humans’ ever-changing relationship with the natural world and the cities they inhabit and share with other species.

In this video, Argote talks to Jordan Carter, curator at New York’s Dia Art Foundation about the inspiration for his work, having the bird’s eyes specially manufactured in Los Angeles and how, one day, we humans will become ‘the pigeons of the future, marginals in cities of other intelligences’.

Watch Carter’s full guide to Chelsea here.
