An international jury comprising Lumi Tan, Victor Wang and Jee Young Maeng has awarded Parcel the Focus Asia Stand Prize.
The Tokyo-based gallery won the Prize for its presentation of Chinese artist Lu Yang’s animated film DOKU The Flow. The exhibition marks the work’s Asian debut.
Taku Sato, Director of Parcel Gallery, Winner of Focus Asia Stand Prize said 'We’re happy that we won the Focus Asia Stand Prize. Everyone here has beautiful booths. It’s all because of Lu Yang. She created this amazing piece and we’re lucky to present it at Frieze Seoul. I’m happy that people are taking the time to watch the work; it’s 50 minutes long and people sit here for up to 30 minutes. It’s surprising, in a really good way.'
NOROO is the Official Paint Partner of Frieze Seoul and supports the Focus Asia Stand Prize.
Focus Asia is presented in collaboration with Stone Island, who provide subsidies that help enable young galleries’ participation in the fair, alongside Frieze’s existing support.
About Parcel’s Focus Asia Presentation
For the Focus Asia section at Frieze Seoul 2024, Parcel is showcasing Lu Yang’s work, DOKU The Flow, for the first time in Asia. This is the second chapter of the Chinese artist’s ‘DOKU’ series, recently exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The term ‘DOKU’ derives from the Japanese dokusho dokushi, which translates to ‘we are born alone, and we die alone’. It features a virtual character, DOKU, digitally constructed from the artist’s own body. The film narrates the solitary journey of this multifaceted avatar, as Lu Yang explores the boundaries of physical existence, delving into a new-found freedom through digital rebirth.
About Lu Yang
Born in Shanghai and based between Shanghai and Tokyo, Lu Yang practises across multiple disciplines, employing digital technologies and working in collaboration with designers, composers, psychologists, dancers, engineers and scientists. Her imaginative realms, tinged with post-apocalyptic nuances, arise from a fusion of Japanese popular culture elements – including video games, manga, anime and pop music – intertwined with Buddhist spirituality, trans-humanist theories and neuro-scientific exploration.
