We meet artist Park Kyung Ryul ahead of her solo presentation with Baik Art gallery, as part of the Focus Asia section at Frieze Seoul 2024

Park Kyung Ryul will present a site-specific installation comprising paintings, works on paper, sculptures, mirrors, found objects and organic matter. The presentation and its elements collectively question the binaries of the permanent and the ephemeral, representation and reality, and surface and substance.

In her experimental practice, Park proposes “sculptural painting”, which expands conventional abstract painting into the three-dimensional space.

Park believes in ‘an aesthetic experience that exists outside of the artist’s intention.’ As viewers move through the exhibition space, plural narratives of both the viewer and the artist unfold.

She likens this journey to climbing a mountain: ‘If we were climbing to the top of the mountain, there could be someone climbing with me, the artist’s intention, or halfway up, we could cross paths, or we could finish at the summit without meeting. There are so many different paths that we could take but regardless, as long as we meet at the summit, I think that all those different journeys have their own meaning.’
