The annual Frieze Gallery Stand Prize has been awarded to Proyectos Ultravioleta in 2024. The Guatemala City gallery won for its trans-generational dual presentation, featuring new paintings by Edgar Calel alongside historical miniatures by Rosa Elena Curruchich (1958–2005), with both artists hailing from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Calel’s work mixes traditional techniques with modern themes, offering a generous perspective on the Mayan cosmovision. Curruchich provides a rich cultural backdrop of Guatemala’s artistic heritage.
The jury said this about the winner: ‘The gallery presents a dialogue between a living artist and a historical practice, addressing economic exploitation and political struggle, in a poetic and lively way.’
The jurors also gave special mentions to Paris’s Galerie Poggi for ‘a cross-section of several decades of work by photographer Dario Villalba, who, throughout his career, challenged the boundaries of photography and explored themes of the human condition’, and Turin’s Galleria Franco Noero, for ‘an elegant display where the focus on a single artist [Martino Gamper] serves as a central element to introduce and integrate the various artistic perspectives of the gallery, all within a domestic setting.’
