Seung-Taek Lee
Tied Money, 1985
Paper and Rope
$50-100k
Presented by Gallery Hyundai, Booth B6
Seung-taek Lee (b. 1932) is widely regarded as a leading figure of the Korean avant-garde for his practice of “non-sculpture”. Many of Lee’s paintings, sculptures and environmental interventions share a kinship with both American Land Art and Korean shamanistic traditions.
Wook-Kyung Choi
On the lake, 1966
Acrylic on paper panel
Presented by Tina Kim Gallery, A9
Wook-Kyung Choi (b. 1940) graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University in 1963, but was also educated and taught in New York City for much of her short yet prolific career. She was most known for her association with Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art which were the main movements in the United States at the time, distinguishing her from other Korean artists and the dominant Korean Avant-garde at the time.
Taiwanese artist Yao Jui-Chung (b.1969) is celebrated for reconfiguring classical ink painting and subverting the methods of an ancient art form. Referencing Xie He’s canonical 6th-century text Six Principles of Painting, while turning away from traditional ink stones and rice paper, the artist paints on thick handmade Indian paper with modern tools, such as ballpoint pens. He then transforms what is usually left blank in the painting into brilliant fields of gold foil.

Presented by Victoria Miro, A5
